Keep Your New Year’s Resolution: Set up a Social, Search-optimized WordPress Blog … Today

This guest post is by Marcela De Vivo of Gryffin.co.

Recently ProBlogger discussed how to brand your blog, how to find your voice, and how to build your authority.

These articles are powerful, but often I find myself speaking with people who don’t have a blog yet, or are using Blogger or custom made, cumbersome platforms. Just this week alone I went through these steps with four different people who want to jump on the blogging bandwagon.

In this article we will go back to basics for those who haven’t started their blog yet, or who are on platforms that are hindering their progress.

If one of your New Year’s Resolutions was to improve your blogging presence—or start a new one—read on!

We’ll go through a step-by-step process, including tools and resources for each step, to set up a WordPress blog that is optimized for social and search marketing success.

WordPress is currently the most popular content management platform.  It can be used for static pages or as a blog.  You can add plugins for a shopping cart, image galleries, and much more.

Here’s how to set it up.

Register your domain with sites like Register.com, Godaddy.com, or Enom.comCreate a hosting account with sites like BlueHost.com, WPEngine, or HostGator.  If you would like to do more research on hosting companies, check out WhoIsHostingThis.Select a WordPress theme. I personally love using StudioPress as the themes are clean, functional, and easy to work with. Search for a responsive theme so your blog will be accessible to mobile users. Is your site running on a different CMS or platform? Consider using a blog migration service, such as BlogWranglers, to move your current site over to WordPress. Hundreds of thousands have done it, with no regrets.Upload WordPress to your hosting account, and customize with your relevant theme.  If you are not a techie, this is the part where you’ll need some help.  Check out Elance.com, Freelancer.com, or a site like Craiglist.org to find someone who can help you set up and customize your template.Install WordPress plugins.

Let’s take a deeper look at the plugins you’ll need.

These are the social media plugins I recommend you consider.

My favorite SEO plugins include these ones.

Usability plugins can be a huge help. Consider these:

To gain exposure from search engines, you need to have your blog focused on a theme. Select a primary keyword within this general theme for each page of the site.  You can read more about keyword research in this ProBlogger article.

Select keywords by identifying low-competition and high-search terms for your industry from Google’s Keyword tool.

Other tools you can use include:

.

While a designer/programmer is working on setting up your site, you can start by writing and preparing content for your site.

A well-optimized page includes the primary keywords in the Title of the page, Meta Description tag, H1 tag, once or twice in the body, and in an outbound link.

As you’re preparing your content, remember these elements of an excellent blog post:

Post title: creative and compellingSocial share icons: make sharing your content easyImage: an image speaks louder than wordsOpening paragraph: include keywords in a teaser into the introductionBody copy: use headers and bold wordsLists: make your content easy to scanConclusion: include a teaser for your next articleRelated posts: give them more content to consumeComment section: Always respond to comments

Read Darren’s compilation from earlier this year for more information on each element in The Anatomy of a Better Blog Post.

By this point you should have a WordPress blog with a range of enhancements made possible by plugins and other customizations.  You will have SEO plugins to improve your on-page SEO, page load times, keyword density, site maps, and other relevant SEO features.

You will also have a selection of social plugins so that you can encourage social shares from your site. You will have other features such as contact forms, tracking, reporting, and an email signup box to build your email list.

Incorporating keyword research will help you to deliver the content that people are looking for in a way that lets it be found.  You can write articles based on long-tail terms, answer questions that your audience may have, and target hundreds of keywords by writing articles specific to each one.

So what are you waiting for? Make your New Year’s Resolution a reality and start your new blog today. And if you have any suggestions of plugins, tools, or services to add to this list, please do share!

5 Things to your subscribers on today by email

I am a strong advocate to build a list on your blog, then do the most. A list of email subscribers is a benefit to any blogger who wants to build their presence, if you are monetizing your blog or not.

Often, new bloggers tell me they want to find readers and more experienced bloggers are always eager to continue their blogs more, rather than see the plateau of readership over time. Your email list can help you to these two challenges.

Today, I wanted to share some ideas for the list of the five different unique emails, you can send to the email that you created on your blog. Any stage of the life cycle of blogging you are, or number of subscribers you have, or how much time he could like you by email the last, I hope that these ideas will give you a few thinking - and perhaps some elements of the action of your list to do.

Reward your customers with a free gift, it is a good thing to do, no matter how long they subscribed. While many bloggers can give a white paper or a special download to encourage visitors to join in the list in the first place, that is no reason to not to offer periodic gifts to your subscribed members, too.

Beginning of bloggers could create a special piece of content to - it may be a free PDF guide for some aspects detailed your topic, or a link to a video in which share you some special secrets that you think readers will want to know.

More experienced bloggers can provide samples of products - anything from a free chapter of your upcoming ebook, a free personal consultation of 15 minutes with your company.

Tip: Be generous with your gift and do not forget to point out that it is an exclusive subscriber, so that your subscribers feel that you like them especially.

When was the last time you asked your readers? When we think of investigations, most of us imagine questionnaires, but not a not a "survey" includes multiple choice questions, or even several questions.

For example, you could send a personal email to your list of subscribers for their comments on the change that you have taken, or that you are considering, to your bog:

a design change or new UpdateA product or service ideaa post particularly well hosted, that you think the construction into something more.

Not to neglect other issues, though: you might ask recommendations for service providers, for example, if you are not sure which can help with certain aspects of your blog or your business.

Ask your subscribers for their opinions and assistance is a very powerful way to gain commitment. It can help you to deepen the links that your subscribers feel with you, because it shows that respect you their opinions and need their support. It also shows that your email list is not only an exercise in marketing.

This idea can easily be linked to some of the other that we already studied. Using your list of subscribers say something important, it is a great way to highlight the benefits for them not only to be on the list, but to actually take the time to open and read your emails, too.

What can you tell them?

your plans for the blog, your offer, or a conference or an event related to your nicheyour thoughts or advice on a development in your niche (which you can also have discussed in a less detailed blog) additional tips or information about a position that was particularly popular on your site, or the readers had lots of questions.

You can probably come up with many ideas for your own blog, depending on your niche.

If there is news in your niche - a product launch, perhaps, or the announcement of a any - why not send your subscribers with some type of inside scoop you have put together specially for them? Alternatively, you could share with them a special look that you have acquired in the course of your research daily to your blog.

Yet again, the information you send could be summarized in a post to blog on your site, but make sure that your subscribers get the version full, thorough, special offer or a different point of view. Don't forget to take the importance of being a Subscriber clearly the quality of your shipment information.

Tip: Take care if you are announcing a special offer or the launch of a product for which you are affiliated. If your subscribers did not expect to receive equipment sale in their subscription to your site, they could well be taken aback. Walk slowly as you start, it is probably the best way to go. Over time, however, you will have an idea of what interest your readers, which will help you target offers to them.

A direct invitation is a great thing to extend to your subscribers. I found that a personal invitation to my subscribers can do a lot to encourage involvement and build the report. It is also very clear to provide the value of your tribe.

You may invite your customers to:

comment on a post that has been something of an experience or a rupture of the routine for youget contact you by email or social media (particularly useful if you have a specific question that you ask or you have just launched a new network of social media presence) take place in a new service program you are beta testingtake a special offer that you are only at their disposal.

Make sure that your invitation is sincere and the event or offer you are invites subscribers to be part of something that you, personally, from behind. These people are the most loyal of your readers, and the goal here is to strengthen and deepen this loyalty, not undermine.

These ideas should help get your creativity flowing. I am interested to hear how established your blog is that you do with your subscribers to the email list. Let me know in the comments.
